Partial Quotient Method for Division- Please WATCH!

Our new math topic has been challenging for many of us...and that's okay!  Sometimes there is a struggle in the learning process, but we aren't going to give up yet!  For those of us who are still finding division with 2-digit divisors challenging, it is time to try a new method; partial quotients!  Partial quotients is a particularly great method for those of us who are still learning our multiplication facts.   Please watch the following clips!

Fall Happenings!

After completing our personal narrative unit in writing, students moved on to free writing this week.  We focused on Fall themes and had a Fall Haiku writing contest.  Students voted on their favorite and a winner(s) was selected!  See below for the work of our top-voted authors:

Dividing by Multiples of Ten

We have moved onto a new topic today in math.  During our new topic, students will be dividing with both 1-digit and 2-digit divisors.  Today, we learned how to divide by multiples of 10.  This concept is the foundation of the proceeding lessons.  Please make sure your child is strong with this concept and skill.  Feel free to watch the video below!

Busy Week in J15!

Students had a very busy week.  We were all entertained during Wednesday's assembly when our very own Will took on King Arthur of the Harlem Wizards and won himself a ticket to their exhibition game being held in November.  During the week we had quite a few guest teachers guide us in social maps, number talks, and math.  On Friday afternoon, students explored the schoolyard looking for examples of weathering and erosion.

Great New Math Resource!

I've added a new website to our math resources!  Check it out...I have it listed as our first link.  Mr. Peters' youtube channel is designed for his "flipped" grade 5 classroom.  A flipped classroom uses a unique approach.  Students learn the content at home through videos and practice in the classroom.  This is good news for us because Mr. Peters not only teaches 5th grade but also uses the enVisions program.

Not all of the lessons are perfectly aligned, but if you take a few seconds you will find our lesson topic within the topic channels.  Here is a peek at some of what we've been learning in our classroom this week:

Student Council Election Winner!

Our classroom was buzzing with excitement earlier in the week with student campaigns in full swing.  We had many candidates working hard on speeches and posters.  Students had a tough decision to make, but after all our votes were cast and counted the classroom of J15 decided on a representative...

Below we can see some of the hard work displayed by the candidates.
